1. aQuolley

1.1 Defining aQuolley

aQuolley is a dynamic and innovative European brand within the realm of water sports. Its name originates from a playful combination of “aqua” (Latin for water) and “volley” (English for volleyball), aptly capturing the essence of the sport: the integration of volleyball elements into a water-based setting.

Concurrently, aQuolley also denotes a versatile water sports system that reimagines traditional ball games—including volleyball, tennis, and handball—by relocating them to aquatic environments, thus merging the advantages of both activities. Its core objective is to foster social connection through engaging games played on specialized courts.

1.2 aQuolley Sports Portfolio

aQuolley courts host six distinct water sports, collectively known as ‘aQuolley sports’.

Aquolley (water volleyball): This is a volleyball adaptation designed for play in water depths of 0.6 to 1.3 meters, featuring adjustable court dimensions, a net, and a specialized ball.
Water Badminton: A water-optimized version of badminton, it utilizes traditional badminton rackets and shuttlecocks, with the net positioned at a height of 1.6 to 1.9 meters.
Water Tennis: This adaptation of beach tennis is tailored for aquatic play, employing beach tennis rackets and balls, and a net set at 1.6 to 1.9 meters.
Water Futnet: A modification of futnet for the water environment, it involves a special ball engineered to bounce on the water’s surface, and the net height can be adjusted down to the standard 1.1 meters, depending on water depth.
Water Handball: This water-based iteration of handball features two goals, a specialized ball, and optional third-division lines for those who wish to implement beach handball rules.
Water Headball: This aquatic version of headball uses two goals, a specialized ball, and an optional court divider for participants who prefer a format without defensive field players.
Each sport within aQuolley’s portfolio boasts its own unique variations, rules, and competitive structures. Due to its prevalence, only the rules of aquolley (water volleyball) are detailed on this platform.

1.3 Key Characteristics of aQuolley Sports

Aquatic Setting: Games are invariably played in water, providing both a refreshing respite from summer heat and an inherently enjoyable environment.
Communal Nature: While playable by pairs, the communal and bonding effects of teamwork and continuous interaction are most pronounced with 4 to 12 participants.
Sporting Diversity: Each of the six core games offers a distinct and appealing experience for players.
Reduced Impact: The buoyancy and resistance of water minimize the risk of injury in these sports.
Health Benefits: The aquatic movement integral to aQuolley has been clinically proven to yield numerous positive physiological outcomes.
Fitness Enhancement: Although primarily focused on shaping rather than building muscle, aQuolley demonstrably improves coordination, and consistent, long-term engagement can significantly contribute to achieving and maintaining fitness and an ideal body weight.

1.4 Target Audience

aQuolley sports are rendered virtually injury-free by the aquatic medium. The buoyancy and resistance of water drastically reduce stress on muscles and joints, making these sports accessible and enjoyable for individuals of all ages, genders, and abilities.

1.5 The Allure of aQuolley

The appeal of aQuolley sports lies in the distinctive synergy between water and gameplay, where traditional ball games are reimagined in a dynamic new context. Water, as a life-giving element, not only cools and protects the body during extended, pleasurable activity but also offers a unique form of recreation characterized by effortless floating, playful diving, and exhilarating jumps. Furthermore, the use of water as a playing field considerably diminishes the influence of physical disparities, affording all participants a relatively level playing field to contribute meaningfully to their team. Consequently, the focus shifts from individual prowess, as typically emphasized in other sports, to collective strategy and teamwork, fostering a singular sense of community. The thrill of competition, the shared pursuit of victory, and the pleasure of light yet vigorous exercise converge to create an unforgettable sporting experience that leaves a lasting impression.

1.6 The aQuolley Platform

The aQuolley Platform: A Multifaceted Concept

The “aQuolley platform” is a versatile term encompassing a well-defined sports system, a unique experiential opportunity, and a vibrant community hub where individuals connect through water sports, both in person and online.

Sports System: aQuolley functions as a framework that delivers comprehensive water sports packages. This includes meticulously designed courts, their accompanying rules, the essential equipment, and the overarching concept for each sport.
Experiential and Recreational Setting: Beyond being a mere product or service, aQuolley provides an active and engaging recreational environment.
Community and Online Hub: aQuolley courts serve as physical spaces for social interaction, enabling people to meet, engage in sports together, cultivate relationships, and become part of a broader community. This is seamlessly integrated with the aQuolley website, which transcends the function of a simple information portal, acting as a community platform where users can exchange experiences, organize teams, publicize events, and connect with fellow enthusiasts of the sport.

2. aQuolley Sports

Sports played on an aQuolley court are designated as ‘aQuolley sports.

2.1 aQuolley Sports Overview

aQuolley sports encompass aquatic adaptations of popular ball games, including water volleyball, water badminton, water tennis, water foot tennis, water handball, and water headball.

2.2 aQuolley Rules Framework

The rules and gameplay of traditional ball games are adapted for the aquatic environment, leveraging the unique properties of water to enrich the playing experience.

2.3 Rule Significance

The appeal of aQuolley sports hinges on its rules, which strike a balance between fun and the inherent challenges of water-based play. Judicious adaptation of original rules ensures satisfaction for all participants, irrespective of skill level.

2.3.1 Adaptation Complexity

The difficulty in adapting to water arises from its significant restriction of movement, demanding rapid reactions and anticipation. A deficiency in these skills can lead to frequent player errors and easy scoring. Conversely, overly simplistic scoring detracts from the game’s essence and excitement.

2.3.2 Adaptation Efficacy

The success of aquatic adaptation lies in establishing an optimal equilibrium between scoring difficulty and movement constraints. Court dimensions tailored to player numbers guarantee realistic defensive opportunities against offensive strategies while preserving offensive freedom. The aquatic setting minimizes disparities in physical abilities, fostering equitable competition across diverse team configurations.

2.3.3 Maintaining Player Engagement

A paramount consideration in developing aQuolley’s rules is to maximize player recreation across various venues, conditions, and team configurations. Given the ineffectiveness of land-based rules in the aquatic domain, novel techniques and regulations have been introduced. For example, open-handed, cupped-palm receptions are permitted as a substitute for forearm touches, which are impractical in deep water.

2.3.4 Illustrative Examples

aQuolley (formerly water volleyball) adapts volleyball for aquatic settings. Consequently, court dimensions are specified to correspond with team sizes. Permissible touches are broad; players may utilize any body part except for throwing or executing double touches. Following a serve reception, a pass within the receiving team is obligatory before transferring the ball to the opponent’s court. Serves that contact the net and land within a valid area must be repeated. Serves must originate from within the court, making contact with the baseline.

These adaptations are intended to maintain the game’s tempo and pleasure.

2.3.5 Effectiveness Demonstration

A Siófok hotel with a court visible via a public webcam consistently displays a venue filled with players, validating the sport’s attractiveness.

6. Preliminary Clarifications

Essential Considerations Before Ordering an aQuolley Court

6.1 Site Suitability Assessment

6.1.1 Water Area and Depth

Confirm that the designated potential installation site meets the minimum water area requirement of 10×6 meters and a water depth specification of 0.6-1.3 meters.

6.1.2 Seabed Composition and Quality

For open water installations, a sandy or fine gravel seabed is a fundamental prerequisite for installability.

In situations involving a muddy or hard seabed, a player mobility assessment is necessary; however, the court itself can be installed without further complications.

6.2 Seabed Usage Regulations

Acquaint yourself with pertinent local regulations and any installation permits that may be required. In Hungary, the relevant water authority holds jurisdiction over seabed usage matters. For regulatory purposes, the court is categorized as a water recreational device.

6.3 Budgetary Considerations

Ensure that adequate funds are allocated for the court’s purchase, setup, and upkeep.

6.4 Off-Season Storage

Develop a storage plan for aQuolley court components during periods of non-use.

6.5 Maintenance and Supervision Protocols

7. Technical Specifications

7.1 Construction

aQuolley courts are modularly constructed aquatic sports arenas. They consistently feature a support module, affixed to the seabed, pool bottom, or the immediate pool surroundings. The net module, with its adjustable height net, is positioned atop the support module. The support module’s components secure the line module, which delineates court boundaries on the water’s surface.

7.2 Modular Construction

aQuolley courts are assembled from modules, themselves composed of simple yet durable components. Repairing or replacing missing or damaged parts is efficient and straightforward.

7.3 Structural Frame Stability

Two support posts, anchored to the seabed or another fixed point, along with 2–2 reinforcing ropes, and the net module stretched between them, constitute a seven-element structural frame.

Provided the structural connections and fixing mechanisms remain intact, this frame exhibits exceptional resistance to external impacts. The net’s height and width are adjustable without compromising structural stability.

7.4 Operation of the line module

Two court lines, part of the line module, mark court boundaries with highly visible cylindrical elements on the water’s surface. These lines are secured with carabiners to anchor buoys at the court’s four corners and to a center line stretched between the net support posts, allowing for rapid module removal or replacement.

2-2 corner clips, threaded onto the court lines’ support ropes, precisely define the playing field’s boundaries; size adjustments are made by repositioning these clips.

7.5 Sports Compatibility

The line module’s design facilitates court size adjustments in half-meter increments. The telescopic design of the net support posts enables fine-tuned net height adjustments. The court’s three-dimensional configurability supports various team ball sports.

7.6 Installability

aQuolley courts are suitable for installation in both open water and pools. For pool installations, components from the pool fixing kit ensure stability and durability. Meticulous size and configuration calculations are essential prior to delivery and installation in pools.

7.7 Mobility

The modular design enables straightforward portability. Each module is removable, simplifying transport and relocation. Lightweight components and materials allow for single-person installation, relocation, dismantling, or sport configuration adjustments.

7.8 Storm Resistance

aQuolley courts are designed to withstand moderate environmental challenges. The line module’s flexible structure allows wind and choppy water to traverse the court with minimal resistance, while the support module maintains structural integrity, stabilizing the net and line modules even in significant waves. Rapidly removable components enable immediate response to severe weather, ensuring the courts’ long-term operational capability.

11. Maintenance

11.1 Maintenance Obligations

The ongoing upkeep of the court is the sole responsibility of the purchaser. The supplier provides support through readily accessible online manuals and helpdesk assistance during business hours.

11.2 Weather Surveillance

Conduct daily monitoring of weather patterns and consult forecasts. No water-installed equipment can endure extreme weather events; this also applies to the court.

In the event of a storm, detach the designated components to avert injuries and mishaps.

Severe wave activity (exceeding 1 meter) can substantially diminish, or even nullify, the elasticity of the line module’s elastic ropes.

11.3 Storm Response Guidelines

The court’s architecture facilitates the swift extraction of components most susceptible to environmental factors from the water. Underwater anchoring screws need not be removed from the location, even during storms.

Consult the subsequent table to determine the appropriate component removal strategy based on weather conditions. The table offers recommendations. Consistently evaluate the prevailing circumstances and implement appropriate actions. The compulsory nature of “recommended” actions is always dictated by the intensity of the current weather.

11.4 Component Removal

Component Removal Procedure and Duration.

To dismantle the line module, detach the carabiners connecting the court boundary lines to the centerline, and the carabiners securing the anchor buoys to their respective anchor ropes. This process requires approximately 5 minutes for both disassembly and reassembly.

For net module removal, first, detach the net from the support posts, and subsequently, install the safety rope between the posts to preserve structural integrity. This procedure takes roughly 5 to 10 minutes per direction.

To extract the posts (and the ground screws affixed to them), gently rock each post left and right, alternating the movement, until it can be lifted out along with its corresponding ground screw. This action consumes about 1 minute per post. Reinstallation is estimated at 5 minutes per post, provided weather conditions remain suitable.

11.5 Routine Maintenance Schedule

At consistent intervals, ideally weekly, inspect the line module’s compliance, the condition of the ropes and boundary markers, and the integrity of the fixings. Similarly, a weekly inspection of the net module is recommended, verifying the proper tension of the support ropes and the absence of any damage or tears in the netting. The operational integrity of the posts and fixing components only necessitates inspection at the start and conclusion of the season.

12. Guidelines for Court Use

Procedures and regulations to ensure the safe and responsible operation of the court, covering supervision, permitted activities, and consequences of misuse.

12.1 General Supervision

Protocols for routine monitoring of court activities, facility integrity, and adherence to usage rules to maintain a safe and orderly environment.

Court oversight encompasses procedures designed to ensure both the safety and appropriate utilization of the court. This may involve assessing the condition of court components, confirming correct component configurations, monitoring user activities, and enforcing adherence to proper usage regulations.

  • Unsupervised court usage by children under the age of 14.
  • Disregarding warnings concerning underwater anchoring elements located near corner buoys.
  • Ignoring directives issued by the beach supervisor.
  • Altering the court’s dimensions or net height beyond the authorized settings.

12.5 Acts of Vandalism

Deliberate actions that intentionally damage or deface the court, requiring repair or replacement of components. The following actions are classified as vandalism:

  • Employing balls exceeding 300 grams in weight.
  • Affixing any object to any part of the court.

12.6 Severe Damage

Incidents resulting in substantial harm to the court’s structure or functionality, potentially rendering it unusable until extensive repairs are completed. The following circumstances constitute severe damage to the court:

  • Causing damage to the net, tensioning, bracing, and anchoring ropes, or the boundary lines through pulling, tearing, or yanking.
